ABOUT OUR FILMS

Since 1986 the Port Jefferson Arts Council has been dedicated to music, film, street festivals and special programming that bring folks together from all walks of life and sustain the creative people that make those events possible. PJAC produces programs based on artforms that are critical to our cultural heritage, artistic conservation and ties to our local community. In other words, "At the heart of arts programming you love since 1986."

Short History of PJAC Film Programming:

Since 1986 the Port Jefferson Arts Council has curated a variety of film programs focusing on different themes. Winner of the Best of Long Island for 9 years, the Port Jefferson Documentary Series fills a vital gap in our area’s access to first run, critically acclaimed documentaries in the Spring and in the Fall. A night out at PJDS is more than a screening - it's a chance to meet old friends and make new ones while engaging with the topics in the films in unique ways. You won't have the chance to meet and pet a rescued owl, take in an upcycled fashion show from young designers or share a dessert with local volunteer organizations while sitting at home watching Netflix! PJDS is more than a movie, it's community.

In 2025 the PJAC was selected by ITVS as one of its lndie Lens Pop-Up Screening Partners. This sought-after selection allowed PJAC to work with the Long Island Museum and the Middle Country Public Library to craft imaginative events ranging from a library fair to a live funk music performance--all free to the public. These film programs focus on community engagement.

Once a month, PJAC & The Long Island Museum present FILM @ LIM Film Series. With LIM we developed a film slate that spoke to the museum's rotation of exhibits, and which honored seasonal celebrations throughout the seasons. Beyond the films, each FILM @ LIM event includes robust post screening activities that run the gamut from traditional O&As to art demonstrations. All the screenings are free and include admission to the museum after 5pm.
